Last month, 62 Brown Middle School students were honored for their leadership, community service and academic pursuits.
The seventh- and eighth-graders became the inaugural members of the school’s National Junior Honor Society (GPA of 3.75 and above) and National Junior Beta Club (GPA of 3.5 and above) – making the middle school the first in Hamilton County to simultaneously have both organizations.
Teachers Kris Culberson and Megan Lyness said the students’ induction was just the beginning.
“We see these students trying to become leaders in the classroom and try to go above and beyond what we ask them to do, and it’s about recognizing that,” Lyness said.
Both she and Culberson plan to come up with enjoyable outings to reward the students, while also providing a platform to allow them to increase their community involvement and leadership training.
“In high school, there’s such a focus placed on academics and getting into college and we want to help prepare students for that starting now,” said Culberson. “[The inductees] were really excited that they were being recognized and that there was a focus placed on them allowing them to be an example for the younger ones.”
Activities for Honors Society and Beta Club members include regular meetings run by students in elected positions, field trips, leadership-building workshops and more.
“We want people to see our students as the shining stars they really are,” Lyness said.
