‘The Drowsy Chaperone’ at Chattanooga State

The Chattanooga State Theatre will present the multiple Tony Award-winning musical “The Drowsy Chaperone” beginning tonight.

With tongue in cheek and toes in tap shoes, “The Drowsy Chaperone” promises fun for all as a fictional musical comedy from 1928 comes to life in one mild-mannered man’s apartment. The man is a little mousey and slightly agoraphobic. But he’s a huge Broadway musical fan. As he listens to his favorite musical theater album, appropriately called “The Drowsy Chaperone,” the musical comes to life in his drab New York apartment, according to a news release.

The production features guest artist Douglas May playing the mild-mannered “man in chair.” Jeffrey Parker, assistant professor of theater arts, stars in the role of matinee idol Robert Martin.

Graduates and current students of the Professional Actor Training Program round out the cast with singing, dancing and comedic mayhem. They include Fiona Battersby, Maggie Bradshaw, Amber Brown, Tiffany Bulloch, Ashley Hart, Amy Henricks, Sydney Hooper, Xander Merciers, Corey Newmyer, Dave Peterson, Eric Phillips, Ellen Poole, Morgan Price, Jake Waters, Justin Wahlne, Jeremy Wilkins and Hannah Wilson.

Sherry Landrum directs. Lindsay Fussell is the choreographer. Mike Lees serves as musical director and Sandy Morris as conductor. The set is designed by graduate John Thomas Cecil.

The show runs tonight and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the Humanities Theatre at Chattanooga State, 4501 Amnicola Highway.

Admission is $10.
