A Whitfield County man wanted for hitting an officer with his vehicle and fleeing as the officer shot at him was denied bond Tuesday.
Robert Cunningham, 37, of 109 West Nance Springs Road in Dalton, Ga., had his first appearance before a magistrate judge Tuesday and will remain in the Whitfield County Jail, officials said.
Mr. Cunningham was found Thursday at a relative’s home in Cumberland County, Tenn., with a gunshot wound to his leg. He was returned to the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, said Maj. John Gibson.
“We’re (still) looking for the other person that was in the car,” Maj. Gibson said.
Mr. Cunningham became a fugitive Jan. 5 after fleeing from a traffic stop. According to records, a deputy pulled over his car as part of a robbery investigation.
When the deputy tried to question him, Mr. Cunningham drove away. The car struck the officer in the leg, and he fired several shots after the vehicle, reports says.
A woman who was in Mr. Cunningham’s vehicle ran away. Deputies know who she is but haven’t located her, Maj. Gibson said.
Mr. Cunningham is charged with aggravated assault, possession of marijuana and methamphetamine, possession of tools in the commission of a crime, fleeing to elude, reckless driving and theft by receiving, police said.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is helping with the investigation because of the officer-involved shooting, he said. GBI investigators have not released their final report yet, he said.
