Auto, gun death comparison faulty

In a recent Page 1 article about car deaths and gun deaths, gun shop salesman Trentyn Murrell, says, “It is a privilege to be able to drive, but it is a right to be able to carry a firearm.”

This is disingenuous at best. Every adult has the right to own a car, but because two tons of metal moving at high speed can be deadly when operated irresponsibly, we have enacted safety regulations as to who can operate one. Cars must be licensed and insured, and to get a license, the operator must show evidence of training and pass a test.

Similarly, every adult has the right to own a firearm, but because its use can be deadly, it makes sense that to protect the average citizen, we must enact sensible regulations, such as licensing, insuring, and training of the operator.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, so far in 2016 there have been 140 verified accidental shootings in the United States. And it’s only the third week in January!
