Girls Inc. hosts annual awards
Girls Inc. has announced 10 women to be honored at the 11th annual UnBought and UnBossed Awards luncheon. Named for the phrase coined by Shirley Chisholm during her historic run for the 1972 Democratic presidential nomination, the UnBought and UnBossed Awards honor local women, who have made a significant impact on the lives of women and girls. Community members nominate women in Hamilton County. Honorees are chosen by 10 high school-age girls participating in Girls Inc.’s Women History Project.
Honorees for 2015 are: Darlene Boyd, loan originator at Regions Financial Corporation; Jo Coke, WTCI-PBS board member and community volunteer; Amanda B. Dunn, partner at Luther-Anderson, PLLP; Dorothy Grisham, agency owner with Allstate Insurance Co.; Dr. Everlena M. Holmes, retired educator and community volunteer; Stacy Lightfoot, vice president of college and career success at the Public Education Foundation; Kelly McCarthy of Partner, Easy Designs, LLC; Dr. Molly R. Seal of Seal, Lawrence and Duke, MD; Christy Mahn Sell, Judge, Division I, Hamilton County General Sessions Court at Law; and Amy J. Walker, CEO and creator of Buy it Local.
During the Women’s History Project, girls learn about women’s rights in the United States, about Shirley Chisholm and the traits of leaders. Participants hone their interview, research and public speaking skills as they develop tributes to the honorees for presentation at the awards luncheon in April.
Girls in this year’s Women’s History Project are: Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences — Ebony Boston (freshman); Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy — Aareon Reed (freshman), Jestiny Desmond (sophomore) and A’Keia Colley (junior); Chattanooga High School Center for Creative Arts — Dessa O’Neal (freshman), Maya Thirkill and Terri Wright (juniors) and Jasmine Pulliam (senior); Hixson High School — Macy Hammon (sophomore); Ooltewah High School — JahReese Radden (senior).
