McCoy property available for events

Just in time for holiday parties, people can now rent the McCoy property following the Walden Board of Mayor and Aldermen’s final approval of a simple lease contract for such events.

“Right now it’s just to make sure we’re covered,” Mayor Peter Hetzler said. “Obviously in time, if we get the property developed, I think it [the lease agreement] will change.”

Those interested in renting the space must apply for a $30 special-use permit from the town. The application must list desired rental date(s), contact information, and a detailed description of the event and the approximate number of attendees.

“There is also the opportunity for the board to add any special conditions,” Town Attorney Michael Stewart said, noting that the agreement must be approved by a majority at the next scheduled board meeting.

Alcohol will be such a case since the town’s insurance does not cover anything when alcohol is involved.

“It will have to be done on a case-by-case basis,” Town Recorder Fern Lockhart said of the decision to allow or not allow alcoholic beverages on-site. “[The lessee] would have to get special event insurance.”

The town reserves the right to require other additional comprehensive liability insurance as well. If required, proof of relevant insurance must be provided no later than 10 days before the event.

The lessee is responsible for attendees and the property during the terms of the contract. A site inspection will take place before and after events and renters must pick up and remove their own trash.

“I think it’s a great start,” Vice Mayor Elizabeth Akins said of the agreement.
