Humane Educational Society Executive Director Bob Citrullo has stepped down as the organization’s leader after more than five years in the position.

Citrullo cited personal health concerns as the reason for his departure in a letter to the shelter’s board of directors. An interim director will be named in coming days.

“While Bob has been an incredible asset during this pivotal time for our shelter, we understand that his health is a priority” Tai Federico, chairman of the shelter’s board of directors, said in a statement. “We will continue to keep Bob and his family in our thoughts while sharing our gratitude for his many accomplishments at the helm of the Humane Educational Society.”

The board will begin its search for a new director immediately, according to a news release.

“I am optimistic that we will easily identify dedicated and experienced candidates,” Federico said. “With many exciting milestones on the horizon, including breaking ground on our long-awaited shelter, I’m confident there will be many qualified applicants for this role.”

So far, the organization is on track to break ground on a new 36,000-square-foot facility this summer, the news release states.
