A house fire at 3016 13th Ave. in East Lake left a man with burns to his hands and face and a family missing some of its pets.

When firefighters arrived on scene, fire was showing throughout most of the structure. They were told by a neighbor that everyone got out of the house, but some dogs were still inside.

The firefighters attempted to extinguish the fire from inside, but conditions worsened and they had to get out of the house.

It took 45 minutes to get the fire under control. The fire caused damage to the siding of one house next door.

Four children and their uncle were in the home at the time. The children got out of the house unharmed, but the uncle suffered burns to his face and hands. He was transported to a local hospital before he was sent to the burn unit at Vanderbilt Hospital. Some of the family’s pets survived, but two of their dogs have not been found.

The fire started in the laundry room and appears to be accidental. The fire is still under investigation.

The estimated loss was at $90,000 for the building and its contents.
