A Howard High School student was arrested Monday in relation to a firearms incident that occurred over the weekend.

The Chattanooga Police Department contacted Desmond McKevie’s probation officer who confirmed that McKevie was on GPS monitoring.

Police located McKevie at Howard and made contact with the school resource officer (SRO) letting him know that McKevie had active warrants for his arrest.

McKevie told the SRO that he had a firearm in his backpack inside of his school locker. The firearm was located, secured, and turned over to police.

McKevie was taken into custody and transported to the Hamilton County Jail without incident. He is charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, vandalism, possessing a firearm with the intent to go armed, and carrying weapons on school property.

Tim Hensley, communications officer for Hamilton County Schools, released this statement:

“Hamilton County Schools would like to thank the school SRO and the Chattanooga Police Department for their quick and thorough work in this situation. There were no threats made toward the school or any students at the school. We appreciate our law enforcement partners in the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department and the Chattanooga Police Department who help us to keep our schools safe. Parents of students at The Howard School were sent a message to inform them of the incident this afternoon. We also depend on our students and parents to share concerns and information with us to keep our children safe. Hamilton County Schools encourages parents and students who see something on social media or hear something in the community involving a school that makes them uncomfortable, to contact the school or the district anonymous tip line on the district website.
