Supplies are running very low for food boxes the Salvation Army hands out to hungry families. The organization sent out a news release Wednesday asking the community to help.

“We have odds and ends but barely enough to put together a food box,” said Sara Bennett, of the Salvation Army’s social services division. “We desperately need the community to donate food!”

The organization is asking community members to donate non-perishable food items.

Most needed items include any type of canned meat, tuna, chicken or hamburger helper, hearty canned soup including chili, ravioli, beef stew and chicken noodle, peanut butter, jelly, macaroni and cheese, instant potatoes, rice side dishes, dry milk or evaporated milk, grits, oatmeal, pancake mix and syrup.

A full list of items can be found at http://csarmy.org/donate_drives.asp.

Bring donations to 822 McCallie Avenue or the Social Services Office at 2140 East 28th Street between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
