Woman, 23, ejected from SUV dies

A woman died Sunday after being ejected from a vehicle her stepmother was driving on Interstate 75 in North Georgia.

Brittney Gravitt, 23, who was not wearing a seat belt, died from injuries suffered when she was thrown from a 1999 Ford Explorer, driven by her stepmother, Karen Gravitt, said Josh Elleman, a dispatcher for the Georgia Highway Patrol.

Karen Gravitt was driving in the left lane of southbound Interstate 75 near mile marker 350 when she began to veer off onto the shoulder, Elleman said. She then overcorrected and the vehicle flipped, he said.

Karen Gravitt was taken to the hospital, Elleman said. Her condition was unavailable late Sunday.

An 18-year-old woman who was in the rear seat also was ejected, Elleman said, adding she was taken from the scene by helicopter.

A 6-year-old and a 2-year-old who were properly restrained in the back seat did not suffer any major injuries, Elleman said. Brittney Gravitt’s Facebook profile said she has a 6-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy.

Elleman said police were unclear as to why Karen Gravitt began to veer off the road.

Police received the call at 12:02 p.m. Sunday. A section of Interstate 75 was shut down, Elleman said, adding it was reopened at 1:30 p.m.

Brittney Gravitt’s “About Me” section of her Facebook profile says: “My name is Brittney and I’m happily married and have 2 beautiful crazy kids.” It indicates she is from Plainville, Ga.
