Alabama pill thefts linked to multi-state burglary ring

FORT PAYNE, Ala. — Burglaries at a Sylvania, Ala., pharmacy in January and July, 2009, have led to federal indictments of suspects in a Florida burglary ring, according to a news release.

DeKalb County, Ala., Sheriff Jimmy Harris said hundreds of pills of hydrocodone, oxycodone, naproxen, diazepam and lithium, among others, were taken.

For the Jan. 3, 2009 burglary, charged with stealing and possessing with intent to distribute controlled substances are Mickey J. Lemons, Richard Allen Crain, John Darrow Maddox and Joshua North, all of New Port Richey, Fla.

For the July 24, 2009 burglary, charged with stealing and possessing with intent to distribute controlled substances are Mr. Lemons, Darrell Andrew Sedilko Jr., Shawn Michael Baker and Daniel Lee Johnson, all of New Port Richey, Fla.

Sheriff Harris said his department’s drug task force worked with the Fyffe and Sylvania police departments and pursued a lead into St. Clair County, Ala. The investigation expanded and hooked up with officers from Pasco County, Fla., then the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the news release stated.

The officers uncovered a ring of about 15 people who were not only burglarizing pharmacies, but also stealing high-performance race engines and zero-turn lawn mowers in Alabama and Florida, the sheriff said.

In April, a federal grand jury indicted the eight people. Sheriff Harris said the county was notified this week of the indictments.

“We are happy to have these cases concluded. It is a testament to the cooperation of the agencies and officers involved that this case was able to be solved across two states and involving so many suspects,” he said.
