As everyone in the South (and lots of folks in the rest of the country) know at this time of year, there’s one big subject everybody is talking about.
“What it was, was football,” to borrow the words of the famous recording by Andy Griffith.
College teams that have had any degree of success in their recent season have gotten invitations to play in one of the now-many bowl games that have proliferated throughout our country.
We are interested in the “Big Orange,” of course. So although the University of Tennessee has no hope for a national championship this year, the Volunteers have been invited to play on Dec. 30 in the Music City Bowl in Nashville against our across-the mountain neighbors in the Tar Heel State, North Carolina. And the excitement has begun to build.
Tennessee has an unaccustomed 6-6 record this year (3-5 in the Southeastern Conference), and opponent North Carolina has a 7-5 win-loss record overall (4-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference).
But both the Big Orange and the Tar Heels are eager and ready to go in Nashville to see which team from opposite sides of the Smokies will prevail.
In any case, there’ll be plenty of bowls. So whoever your favorite team may be, no one will have any shortage of season-ending college football.
