Ranger, Ga., not Baghdad, Iraq

Sensible and humane Americans surely find it hard to understand how vicious religious and political fanatics in Iraq can hate so much, even during a factional war, that they could plant bombs to murder and maim innocent civilians indiscriminately.

Even more inexplicable, however, is the thought that a terrible bomb explosion could occur in the little Georgia community of Ranger, on U.S. Highway 411 southeast of Chattanooga and Chatsworth, Ga.

According to an amazing report, when a man investigated what looked like an ordinary “electrical cord” attached to perhaps a light in a box spring in a shed, near a house trailer parked in a yard, a bomb went off, bloodily injuring the man.

How could such a horrible thing be possible?

There obviously was no immediate answer. But the result might have been much worse, since numerous family members could have been in the area when the explosion occurred, potentially killing or injuring several people.

Investigators are working to solve the mystery, with few immediate clues to explain the cause of the horrible event.
