Walker County honors seniors

The recent observance of Walker County’s annual Senior Citizens Day was filled with smiles, laughter and fellowship.

“Many of the seniors look forward to this day and see friends they might not have seen in a year,” said master of ceremonies Don Stultz Jr., whose father founded the event.

Among highlights of the day was the bestowing of the Most Senior Citizen Award, which went to 103-year-old Lillie Mae Stewart. The resident of Heritage Healthcare of LaFayette, Ga., whose next birthday is Sept. 24, won $50 from the Bank of LaFayette.

“I’m just so proud to get it,” she said with a broad smile after the presentation. “It’s just so special. I appreciate everyone who had something to do with it.”

Mr. Stultz praised the many volunteers and businesses that contributed their time and efforts to the festivities, hosted by the Walker County Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s a very popular event throughout the county,” he said. “I think it’s one of the most positive things we do to reinforce the values these seniors set forth.”

The day included breakfast for early arrivals, lunch, bingo and musical entertainment. Proclamations were read from the Walker County commissioner’s office and the cities of Chickamauga, Rossville and LaFayette.

As the day featured a sports theme, volunteers representing civic organizations dressed in athletic jerseys and apparel, and tables were decorated with sports equipment.

Nelda Parrish, chairwoman of the event, said it is meant to honor those who “helped mold” Walker County.

“People look so forward to this all year, and we love doing it,” she said. “It touches your heart because they’re just special people.”
