Nissan, EVgo adds 200 more fast chargers across US
Nissan and EVgo are expanding the charging network for EV drivers with the installation of 200 direct current fast chargers across the United States.
Each of the new fast-chargers is capable of delivering 100 kilowatts and have both CHAdeMO and CCS connectors so more EV drivers can benefit.
“Given the tremendous driver response to the 2019 long-range1 all-electric LEAF, Nissan and EVgo will accelerate fast charging by committing to a multi-year charger construction program that will continue to expand fast-charging options for EV drivers across the country,” said Aditya Jairaj, director of EV sales and marketing at Nissan North America, Inc..
The joint investment by Nissan and EVgo expands on a six-year partnership between two of the original leaders in transportation electrification. Nissan has installed more than 2,000 quick charge connectors across the country since 2010 to build the largest public EV fast charging network in the U.S..
More than 100 million Americans currently live within a 15-minute drive of an EVgo fast charger.
Amazon robots come to Seattle
Amazon’s self-driving robots will be roaming the streets of another neighborhood.
The online shopping giant said Tuesday that the six-wheeled robots, about the size of a smaller cooler, will begin delivering packages to customers in Irvine, California. It comes after Amazon began testing them in a suburb of Seattle at the beginning of the year.
Amazon said the robots, which are light blue and have the Amazon smile logo stamped on its sides, are able to avoid crashing into trash cans or pedestrians. Still, a worker will accompany the robots at first.
Other companies have been testing similar delivery robots on college campuses, delivering burgers or soda to students.
Amazon said its robots, which it calls Scout, will be delivering orders to doorsteps Monday to Friday and only during the day.
Apple credit card ready for mobile use
An Apple-branded credit card designed primarily for mobile use started rolling out on Tuesday.
Apple announced the card in March in a partnership with Goldman Sachs. On Tuesday, some iPhone users who had requested a notification got nvites to apply through Apple’s Wallet app. The company is expected to expand sign-ups more broadly in coming weeks.
The company promises quick sign-ups and the elimination of most fees. Customers typically get 2 percent cash back, but industry experts say the financial benefits of Apple Card mirror many of those already out there for consumers.
What sets Apple Card apart from other cards is its reliance on the iPhone. Though customers can request a physical card for free, an iPhone is required to apply, check statements and pay balances.
Former Fed leaders push independence
In a strong rebuke to President Donald Trump, the four living former leaders of the Federal Reserve say that the head of the nation’s central bank should be able to make interest-rate decisions free of political pressure and the threat of being removed or demoted.
The former chairs – Paul Volcker, Alan Greenspan, Ben Bernanke and Janet Yellen – argued in an opinion piece published Tuesday in The Wall Street Journal that history has proven that central banks deliver the best results for the economy when they act “independently of short-term political pressures.”
Current Fed Chairman Jerome Powell has come under heavy attacks from Trump, who has repeatedly attacked Powell’s decisions and has reportedly explored the possibility of either firing Powell or demoting him as Fed chairman.
