The Scenic City Women’s Network, which offers support for working Christian women so that they can exemplify their faith in all they do, is preparing for its annual Praise Breakfast, the nonprofit organization’s biggest event of the year. The breakfast will feature author and speaker Carol Kent at the Chattanooga Convention Center Thursday, June 23 from 7-9 a.m.

The event is open to anyone and typically draws around 350 attendees.

Past featured speakers include Ruth Graham, wife of famous evangelist Billy Graham, and international Bible teacher Kay Arthur.

“All of our speakers have a story that involves a lesson in how to overcome adversary in our lives,” said SCWN board President Phyllis James.

James, a Signal Mountain resident, attended her first SCWN Praise Breakfast in 2000 and has been involved with the organization ever since.

Kent was chosen to speak at this year’s breakfast because her story is one she believes the women of the organization will be able to relate to, James said. Titled “Embraced by God,” Kent’s talk will focus on her journey of faith as her son is convicted of murdering his wife’s ex-husband in order to rescue his stepchildren from child abuse, and is then sent to jail.

“It’s a story of unshakable faith and how she was able to get through that as a parent,” said new SCWN Executive Director Renee Nail, who took the helm in May. Prior to joining SCWN, the East Hamilton resident worked throughout her career for nonprofit organizations, most recently for the local Choices Pregnancy Resource Center.

Throughout the year, SCWN offers services to local Christian working women such as luncheons, Bible studies and webinars on how to deal with issues in the workplace from a Christian perspective, said James.

“The church does a great job of serving its members, but if you work, you cannot attend a lot of the women’s ministries, which are mostly held between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.,” said Nail. “We target working women who the only times they have are lunch and a brief period at night when they can get their own nourishment.”

The cost to attend the breakfast is $25 per person or $200 for table of eight. For more information about the event or SCWN, email scwn@scwn.org, call 698-6262 or visit scwn.org.
