CLEVELAND, Tenn. — The Bradley County Board of Education will not select a new director of schools on Monday, as board Chairman Nicholas Lillios recently announced.

Instead, the board’s Monday agenda will be to consider the adoption of the contract it will offer the new director of schools and to announce two candidates for the position, Lillios said late Thursday.

“We’ll actually be announcing two candidates that, in days from that meeting, we’ll be interviewing and then doing a selection on,” he said.

In March, the school board voted 5-0 to require measurable goals to be an integral part of the next director of schools’ contract. The contract “should have deliverables,” said board member Chris Turner, who proposed the agreement include such stipulations.

The new director will replace Johnny McDaniel, who accepted a buyout of his contact from a divided board in February.

Scott Humberd, the system’s supervisor of attendance/technology, has been serving as interim director of schools since March.

In a Feb. 9 joint statement with Lillios, McDaniel cited “philosophical differences” between him and a majority of the Bradley County Board of Education.

Lillios has refused to comment on the differences mentioned by McDaniel, and has said that such a discussion would not be “healthy or productive for the community.”

McDaniel supporters packed a series of tense school board meetings leading up to the Feb. 24 vote to approve the buyout.

According to McDaniel’s buyout agreement, he will continue to receive an estimated monthly salary of $9,500, plus benefits, until his contract expires on June 30, 2016, or until he finds comparable employment.
