New Year’s traffic fatalities drop

Initial reports show that 10 people died in traffic-related incidents over the New Year’s holiday weekend, which is two less than last year, according to the Tennessee Department of Safety.

Ten people were killed in eight fatal crashes across the state between 6 p.m. Thursday and midnight Sunday, according to preliminary reports. Twelve people died in crashes during the 2008-09 New Year’s holiday.

Two of this year’s 10 fatalities were alcohol-related, two deaths were pedestrians. The lowest number of people killed during a New Year’s holiday was during a 78-hour period in the 1982-83 holiday when eight died.

Reports also show that two people died during the 2009 Christmas holiday weekend compared to nine fatalities in 2008.
