Ooltewah resident crafts handmade bow ties

Tied Up In Stitches' most popular bow tie fabric is this mallard duck print, which is the only pattern she offers year-round.

When Ooltewah resident Savannah Hartman gave her now-husband a bow tie for Christmas their second year together, it sparked his lasting love affair with the dapper neck accessory – and set in motion what eventually became her business.

“He never wore a regular necktie again,” Hartman said.

When he couldn’t find a bow tie he liked in stores, she utilized the sewing skills she’d learned in a life skills class in high school to craft some herself.

Last September, she started offering her creations to the public through her Etsy shop, Tied Up In Stitches.

“I’m just sharing something my husband and I both love with the consumer,” said Hartman, whose husband helps pick out or gives his seal of approval to each of the fabrics used, which change seasonally and range from masculine florals to mallard ducks to tweeds in the wintertime.

The new summer line features brighter and bolder patterns than Hartman has done in the past, she said.

“I think people should check them out because they’re really cool and different,” said Hartman. “They’re not something you’ll find in a big box [store], and they have the approval of all the men in my family.”
