COLUMBUS, Ga. – DNA evidence from a Georgia death row inmate known as the Columbus “Stocking Strangler” is headed to the state crime lab.
Carlton Gary said at a court hearing this week that he approves having the four pieces of DNA evidence tested at a state lab in Decatur to see whether they could link him him to the 1970s stranglings.
Gary was scheduled to die Dec. 16 after he was convicted of raping three elderly women and then strangling them with their own stockings.
But the Georgia Supreme Court halted the execution and ordered a judge to consider his request for DNA testing that wasn’t available during his 1986 trial.
