Council tables local preference ordinance

The City Council voted 6-1 Tuesday to table an ordinance that included a provision giving local preference on tie bids.

Councilman Manny Rico voted against the tabling. Councilmen Russell Gilbert and Andraé McGary were absent from the meeting.

The provision would allow for local contractors to receive work in case of a tie bid as long as they employed or used local resources within a 75-mile radius.

City officials have said they would put the policy in the city’s bidding manual.

The council also unanimously approved 10 ordinances that would increase fees on city permits. The permits range from plumbing to electrical and adult entertainment businesses.
