Today is Good Friday, an important Christian holiday marking the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

So why is it called “good?”

Some sources say the phrase is derived from “God’s Friday.” But according to a BBC article, which quotes Fiona MacPherson, senior editor at the Oxford English Dictionary, the adjective “good” traditionally “designates a day on (or sometimes a season in) which religious observance is held.”

Think “good tide” at Christmas.

And remember, Tennessee is among the 12 states that observe Good Friday as a public holiday, so that means schools, banks and government offices are all closed today. It also means free parking.
