After several days fighting a Signal Mountain wildfire, local volunteer fire crews have returned to their day jobs.

But the firefight is far from over.

The blaze has expanded since Sunday morning, when officials said the brush fire measured 20-acres off Roberts Mill Road, as dry winds blew it into parched patches of leaves and deadwood strewn across the side of the mountain.

Today, Division of Forestry area forester Shannon Gann said that the fire is active across about 80 acres.

The Tennessee Division of Forestry has assumed command of the scene, and is expected to remain as the lead agency on the firefight until it is extinguished.

A helicopter roamed the area dropping water on hotspots from above this morning, she said.

Those hotspots, Gann said, are responsible for the black smoke that area residents may have seen rising from the area this morning.

No homes or building are currently considered endangered by the fire.
