Students teach students about free enterprise

Future Business Leaders of America recognizes Nov. 15 annually as National American Enterprise Day.

“This special day is set aside to salute, publicize and teach children about the American enterprise system,” said Ooltewah High School FBLA member senior Michelle Brown. “This year the Future Business Leaders of America at Ooltewah High School partnered with Ooltewah Elementary School to educate all the third-grade students about the American enterprise system. Every student involved in the project will learn all different aspects of the American enterprise system and how it relates to their lives.”

Brown said students learn the difference between needs and wants, how to count money, how to make money, how to wisely save money, vocabulary and about sources of income and long-term and short-term savings.

She said each Wednesday in November, FBLA students visit Ooltewah Elementary to teach third-graders for one hour.

OHS FBLA advisor Pam Lane said her students create lesson plans and write scripts for four classes. Thirty-one active FBLA members and two advisors are involved in the project.
