Chattanooga: Blood Assurance powers buses with chicken-fat fuel

As part of an effort to reduce its impact on the environment, Blood Assurance is fueling one of its buses with a renewable biofuel made from chicken fat.

Blood Assurance, the region’s blood bank, has been partnering with local biofuel company TrimChick, a subsidiary of Southeastern Sales, for the past six months to test out the fuel in one of its buses, said area manager Jason Hodges.

If all goes well with a maintenance check on the bus, scheduled for later this week, the blood bank will expand the fuel change to the rest of its eight-bus fleet, he said.

The blood bank’s donation buses each use 300 gallons of diesel fuel every month, but biofuel gives about the same mileage, Mr. Hodges said.
