Carolina owned just a 7-18 record through five series this season but wound up taking four of five from Chattanooga after Sunday’s 7-2 win.
The Mudcats (11-19) pounced for four first-inning runs against Lookouts starting pitcher Jesus Castillo, which included Jake Kahaulelio’s home run to right-center and Eric Eymann’s two-run double to left.
A rare highlight for the Lookouts (13-17) was Jaime Pedroza’s homer in the fourth. Dee Gordon and Scott Van Slyke combined to go 0-for-9, which lowered Gordon’s season average to .273 and Van Slyke’s to .299.
Game one of a five-game series against Mississippi at AT&T Field is tonight at 7:15.
John Koronka (0-2, 4.50) is scheduled to start for the Lookouts, with Richard Sullivan (1-1, 4.45) scheduled for the Braves.
