ATLANTA (AP) – Georgia State University officials say a suspicious device that prompted a freeway closure and traffic backups was a student art project.

Officials said in a statement that the tube-shaped object found taped to the 14th Street bridge spanning the downtown connector on Monday was one of 18 cameras that was part of the project.

Police closed the freeway in both directions and detonated the camera while traffic piled up and spilled onto local surface streets.

GSU officials say campus police are working with the Atlanta Police Department to remove the other 17 cameras that were part of the project.

Department spokeswoman Kim Jones says the investigation is ongoing, and it’s not yet clear if the student who taped the camera to the bridge will face charges.
