University of Tennessee at Chattanooga head coach Rusty Wright was asked after Tuesday’s practice to provide one solid area and one place where each of his three quarterbacks competing for the starting job needs to improve.
His answer for all three: “He’s getting better, but needs to be more consistent.”
It’s a relatively simple ask for the one position where a starter hasn’t emerged, nine days before the 18th-ranked Mocs’ first game against Austin Peay, ranked 20th in the Football Championship Subdivision STATS poll and 25th in the AFCA Coaches’ Poll.
Senior Drayton Arnold and juniors Cole Copeland and Robert Riddle are the three guys battling it out, and each has shown some solid moments during training camp.
“It’s been better that the group has got better in the last week and a half or so, just because we stopped installing things, things have slowed down and we’ve narrowed our focus a little more on things we’re going to definitely carry throughout the season,” Wright said. “The biggest thing is that they have to stop worrying about trying to make plays and just go execute the offense. I think at times out here in practice, they’re trying to go win the job that way, when the guy just has to be consistent and make good decisions and give yourself an opportunity.
