More ‘gun’ foolishness

The Second Amendment of the Constitution provides that “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Fine.

There are proper, constitutional laws regulating the possession and use of arms, simply as a matter of public safety. Fine.

But unfortunately, there are some people who violate sound laws. They should be punished.

But there are also some foolish proposals regarding guns. One is now in the Tennessee Legislature. It involves a proposed law that would affect the University of Tennessee and other public colleges — and guns.

Rep. Stacey Campbell, R-Knoxville, has proposed a law to say “no public college or university shall prohibit or penalize any person who legally possesses or uses a firearm and who is enrolled as a student or athlete in such public college or university for the transportation, possession, use or legal ownership of such firearm when such person is not on the property of the public college or university.”

Students are reasonably and properly prohibited from having guns on campus. Do you see any good reason or need for the Tennessee General Assembly to approve this off-campus gun proposal? Or would it be wiser just to leave the subject alone?
