New exhibit commemorates civil rights sit-ins

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee State Museum will present an exhibit commemorating the sit-ins that occurred during the civil rights movement.

“We Shall Not Be Moved: The 50th Anniversary of Tennessee’s Civil Rights Sit-ins” opens Thursday and runs through May 16.

The exhibit covers events in Nashville, Chattanooga, Memphis, Knoxville and other locales that dramatized opposition to segregation.

The free exhibit includes a department store similar to those found in the downtown shopping districts of Tennessee during this era.

A handful of Nashville college students were involved in sit-ins at lunch counters. The original stools from these sit-ins at Nashville’s W.T. Grant’s store are held in the museum’s collection and are featured in the exhibit.
