Over the past few years, Dustbowl Revival has been making a name for itself with a vibrant mix of vintage Americana sounds. The eight-piece band’s eclectic music ranges from Western swing to Dylan-inspired folk, gospel to Chicago blues, big band to mariachi-flavored marches.

But with the release of its self-titled album last summer, Dustbowl Revival revealed a more soulful, funky side. Fans at Nightfall on Friday, June 1, will hear this when Dustbowl Revival headlines the free summer concert in Miller Plaza. Priscilla and Little Rickee will open at 7 p.m.

Most of Dustbowl Revival’s songs are written and composed by Zach Lupetin, harmonica, guitar, kazoo and vocals. Liz Beebe, Daniel Mark, Matthew Rubin, Ulf Bjorlin, Josh Heffernan, Connor Vance and James Klopfleisch comprise the rest of the band.

The evolution in the band’s sound has been an organic one. Since its last album, “With a Lampshade On,” the Revival has been on the road, winning over audiences with its free-flowing live performances. After playing more than 200 shows a year during the last four years, the musicians realized they had outgrown the label of a retro band playing music from a bygone era and needed to move in new directions.

To help them achieve that musical vision, the band turned to Grammy Award-winning producer Ted Hutt. He produced Old Crow Medicine Show’s 2014 release “Remedy,” which earned Hutt the Grammy. With Hutt’s assistance, Dustbowl Revival created what they have called “the tightest, funkiest thing we’ve ever attempted.”

See why Dustbowl Revival was named by L.A. Weekly the city’s Best Live Band in 2013. Nightfall, produced by Chattanooga Presents, will be held rain or shine.

There will be no Nightfall shows on Fridays, June 8 and 15, so as not to conflict with Riverbend. Shows resume June 22 with Hive Theory.
