Track & Field

* Tennessee Wesleyan junior Josh Parsons from Rhea County is the Appalachian Athletic Conference men’s track athlete of the week after doubly qualifying this past weekend for the NAIA outdoor national meet with his second-place 10.57 and 21.31 times in the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the Charlotte 49er Classic.

Softball

* Carson-Newman third baseman Katie Pritchett from Heritage High in Ringgold is the South Atlantic Conference softball player of the week after going 5-for-8 with two homers, a double, five RBIs and three runs scored. The only out she made in a Saturday sweep of Queens was on a sacrifice bunt.

Basketball

* Two players from Georgia Cumberland Academy, team captains Hannah Carr and Olivia Williams, recently signed enrollment papers to continue their basketball careers with Georgia Northwestern. “They are really good students and really good athletes as well,” GNTC coach David Stephenson said in a school release. “I’m happy to get them both.” Williams pointed out that the two used to compete against each other but have played together the last four years and are delighted to continue the connection. “Olivia is a scrapper,” Stephenson said. “She loves basketball. She’s got long arms and we don’t think she’s finished growing yet. Hannah is a good ball-handler, and she’ll bring a lot of tenacity to our program.”

* The Tennessee Rising Stars AAU 10th-grade girls’ basketball team won the March Madness tournament this past weekend in Cleveland. The team includes Bailey Anderson, Sarah Edwards, Sindy McElhenney, Sara Knipp, Victoria Payne, Lacey Roberts, Alivia Smith, Brooklyn Whaley and Valdasha Whaley.
