RINGGOLD, Ga. — Greyson Sigg tried to make a run at Andy Shim.
The Augusta resident tried to make birdies Thursday to overcome the lead his fellow Georgian — Shim lives in Lawrenceville — built during the first two rounds of the Evitt Foundation Ringgold Telephone Junior All-Star tournament at WindStone Golf Club.
But after 16 holes, Shim had control of his game, a tight grasp on first place. Sigg had a feeling he was in third and absolutely knew he couldn’t claim the big trophy in the American Junior Golf Association event.
Shim won the three-day event with a 6-under-par 204 after a morning shotgun start set up to avoid afternoon thunderstorms.
“Yesterday, my putting was not bad, but today it was really good and I made a lot of birdies,” Shim said. “Today was really good. I did not miss a lot of greens.”
He made five birdies Thursday, including one to start his round on No. 1, in adding another victory to the Preseason Junior he won at Chateau Elan last week.
“This win means a lot because I have won two in a row now and I would like to keep winning,” said Shim, who was born in Korea.
Christopher Guglielmo of Cumming, Ga., finished second at 2-under 208. Sigg, who bogeyed his last two holes after realizing he couldn’t win, tied for third at 211 with Leonardo Kitahara of Brazil.
“I wanted to finish strong, but it didn’t really happen,” Sigg said. “I had an up and down day, but I was pretty consistent for the week.”
In the girls’ division, Rachel Dai of Suwanee, Ga., cruised to victory via consistency. She shot 70 on Tuesday, 71 on Wednesday and a three-birdie 69 on Thursday, totaling even-par 210.
Dai beat Hee Wook Choi by five strokes. Marissa Kay and Michaela Owen tied for third at 9 over.
“It feels very nice and relieving, because I’ve worked hard over the last couple years to get this far,” Dai said. “Finally, I’ve been able to take my game to the course and actually deliver.”
