Young foodies ready to move on from slathering peanut butter and jelly onto slices of bread will find their match in Intermediate Cooking Camp at Bachman Community Center for rising fifth- through seventh-graders.

“Any kid that has an interest in food, cooking or being a chef, or just likes helping mom out around the kitchen, will enjoy it,” said instructor Amy Garvich, a fifth-grade teacher at Thrasher Elementary.

Campers will learn to prepare a four-course meal, focusing on a different course each day and discussing cooking-related topics throughout such as table etiquette, measurement, food safety and nutrition. The session runs Monday, June 20-Friday, June 24 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Garvich said the first day she will concentrate on the art of appetizers, going over the different kinds and explaining why they are included with a meal. Campers will create a soup or salad on Tuesday, followed by the main course on Wednesday and a dessert on Thursday.

“I’ll choose something kid-friendly that will show measurement and sanitation when handling food,” said Garvich, who has yet to make her final decision on which recipes will be prepared. “Students will work in groups so everyone gets a chance to help in the creation.”
