After a rather quiet fall in which the bulk of his work was practicing with the scout team, Graham Nichols already is very busy in spring practice.

The freshman, who redshirted last season, is the only other quarterback on the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga roster besides starter B.J. Coleman, which means he’ll get plenty of hands-on attention and repetitions during the ongoing workouts.

“Graham’s got to develop and we’ve got to come out of spring thinking he’s a legit backup guy for us,” Mocs coach Russ Huesman said. “He’s a snap a way from playing, so it’s really important.”

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Nichols was a Mr. Football award finalist as a senior at Franklin (Tenn.) High School. He threw for 2,204 yards and 20 touchdowns, with just two interceptions, and led his team to the 5A state championship game.

Now, as UTC’s only backup, he knows he has to have a very productive spring to be ready to play in the fall.
