NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A desktop computer missing from a Vanderbilt University professor’s campus office may have jeopardized the personal information of more than 7,000 current and former students.
WSMV-TV reports the computer held names, Social Security numbers and grades of 7,147 current and former students.
Students were notified about the security breach in a letter mailed March 10. The break-in happened at the professor’s locked office on Feb. 6. University spokeswoman Beth Fortune says it took time to determine exactly what information was on the computer.
Vanderbilt says it will pay for identity protection, credit monitoring and credit alerts for up to 12 months for the affected students.
