The final match of the 2018 Vintage Base Ball season will be played Saturday, Aug. 25, on the polo field at the historic Army Post on Barnhardt Circle in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia.
The doubleheader features the Travellers Club of Brentwood, Tennessee, taking on local team Mountain City at noon. Then East Nashville Phoenix will play Chattanooga Lightfoot Club at 2:30 p.m.
“The end of the season is when we see some of the best base ball being played,” says Chris McKeever, director of the 6th Cavalry Museum.
For those not familiar with vintage base ball – which uses the two-word spelling of baseball – the game is played with rules, equipment, costume and culture of the 1860s. Players are all volunteers. The game, called a match, is played with wooden bats and no gloves.
McKeever says in addition to watching the game, visitors may tour the museum and step back in time to learn about Fort Oglethorpe’s unique military history. Additionally, musician Doug Carson will play period music.
Admission to the game and 6th Cavalry Museum is free, as is parking. Bring a lawn chair or blanket for seating since there are no bleachers.
