U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., is recovering from Wednesday morning leg surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, his chief of staff said in a statement.
David Cleary quoted Alexander’s surgeon, Dr. Herbert Schwartz, as saying, “I successfully removed an atypical lipoma from Senator Alexander’s left leg. The surgery went as planned, and I will consult with my team and Senator Alexander to determine whether additional treatment is necessary.”
Cleary said the senator “looks forward to returning to Senate work shortly after the recess.”
On its website, the Mayo Clinic defines a lipoma as a fatty lump that is often situated between the skin and the underlying muscle layer.
Alexander has represented Tennessee in the Senate since 2003.
