The Chattanooga Red Wolves had USL League One’s top team on the brink of defeat Saturday night in Nebraska, but the visitors could not close the deal.

Chattanooga lost 2-1, giving up goals in the 88th and 91st minutes to Luis Gil and Dion Acoff as Omaha improved to 10-3-10 and reached 40 points in the league standings.

In the 28th minute, the Red Wolves’ Moe Espinoza provided a brilliant strike from more than 30 yards out on a shot that sailed above the Omaha keeper and into the top right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Red Wolves (9-10-6, 33 points) had gone eight straight matches without losing, a streak that dated to July 16. Chattanooga returns to competition next Saturday in Wisconsin, visiting Forward Madison FC at 8 p.m. Eastern.
