Chattanooga man wanted on multiple felony warrants arrested after police chase, crash

A Chattanooga man wanted on multiple felony warrants was arrested Sunday after a police chase ended in a crash involving multiple vehicles, according to a news release.

Around 5:30 p.m., a Chattanooga police officer noticed the vehicle of a wanted suspect for multiple felony warrants, including kidnapping, and attempted a traffic stop.

The vehicle, driven by 28-year-old Chester Phelps, fled from the officer and approached the intersection of East 23rd Street and South Holtzclaw Avenue, crossing over into oncoming traffic, the release stated.

As a result, a patrol vehicle that was not involved in the pursuit was struck head-on by the suspect. According to authorities, two other vehicles were also struck before the vehicle that Phelps was driving came to a rest.

Phelps was taken into custody, and emergency services transported the patrol officer to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries. The officer was released later that evening.

The investigation is ongoing, and further charges are pending, police said.

In 2015, Phelps was charged with criminal homicide, tampering with evidence and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, according to Chattanooga Times Free Press archives.
