Kam Brown feels like there isn’t a better group of receivers in the Southern Conference than the one he faces every day at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football practice.
Even if the rest of the league apparently doesn’t agree.
When the preseason All-SoCon selections were announced at media day in late July, no UTC receivers were on the list, but those first- and second-team selections were made by coaches (who couldn’t vote for their own players). So while Brown didn’t have a vote, he certainly has an informed opinion.
“Going against Jamoi (Mayes) and Sam (Phillips) every day in practice, it’s just like that in the games,” the All-America cornerback said. “That’s probably the best I’m going to see, so going against other receivers (in the SoCon) makes it even funner because they’re not as good as Jamoi and Sam that I see in practice.”
Mayes, Phillips and Javin Whatley are UTC’s primary trio of receivers, and they’ve dubbed themselves the “Dirty Birds” due to the scrappy, edgy nature of how they play. While they’re young, they feel like one of the more experienced groups top to bottom on the team, considering those three were the starting receivers last year, when UTC went 7-4.
