For those starting out the new year with the goal of losing fat, working out is an obvious step toward achieving that objective. Less apparent is the fact that building muscle helps to optimize time spent exercising, allowing the body to burn fat more easily, according to Kay Turner, who will begin her Body Sculpting with Kay class at Signal Mountain Athletic Club Monday, Jan. 10 at 9:15 a.m.
“[Participants] will gain an awareness of how weights can benefit them in their fitness routine,” said Turner. “I’d love to see people gain a love for fitness and increase their muscle mass so they can burn fat quicker.”
The class will be offered to SMAC members Mondays and Fridays from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. The charge is $10 per class or $80 for a package of 10 classes, with no payment required for the first class attended.
Turner said the class is ideal for any fitness level, as the use of free weights allows the routines to be adjusted by increasing or reducing the amount of weight used.
“It’s a good class for beginners because they can do squats or lunges with low or no weights, and everyone feels like they’re doing the same thing,” Turner said.
The Signal Mountain resident said she has been teaching a similar class at the YMCA, but this will be her first time offering the class at SMAC.
“It’s fun to work with people in your same community and build one-on-one relationships,” she said. “Not having to drive off the mountain is wonderful.”
Turner said her SMAC class differs in size as well as its incorporation of barbells, which were ordered by SMAC especially for the class, in addition to the use of free weights.
“It’s more of a small, intimate setting – more of a personal training environment,” she said of the SMAC class. “I encourage people to ask questions, and I really want to teach good form to prevent injuries and make their workouts more beneficial.”
