Mary Kathryn Levy learned early in her career that when it comes to raising money for worthy causes, the art of the ask is all about listening.

As director of philanthropy at United Way of Greater Chattanooga, Levy talks to donors about the agency’s mission and programs. But it’s in their responses — and interests — that strong partnerships are forged, she says.

“I try to first understand what their general passions are, then chances are it will intertwine with the United Way’s missions in some way,” Levy, 37, said in an interview.

Levy, among other duties, is responsible for the United Way of Greater Chattanooga’s Alexis de Tocqueville Society, which focuses on larger donations from individuals. During the pandemic, this set of United Way donors gave almost $1 million to help people who were losing their jobs, Levy said.

The youngest of three sisters, Levy grew up in Mobile, Alabama and was active in sports during her youth. She learned leadership as captain of her high school volleyball team at St. Paul’s Episcopal School in Mobile.
