With a natural ability to make great things happen any time the ball is in his hands, Trace Hawkins looks to blaze a unique trail over the next four years on the football field and basketball court with Calhoun High School.
The multi-talented Hawkins made his presence felt in a very loud way on Friday as the freshman quarterback led the 55-21 home victory over Northwest Whitfield that placed Calhoun firmly in the driver’s seat of the Region 7-3A title race.
Taking full command of the Yellow Jackets attack, the 6-foot Hawkins showcased his dual-threat ability as he completed 13-of-22 passes for 263 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing for 34 yards and two scores. His timing with Justin Beasley was impeccable as they connected on touchdowns of 71, 62 and four yards.
Hawkins’ breakout performance has earned him this week’s Times Free Press Player of the Week honors.
“I have grown up in a sports family,” said Hawkins, who did not lose a single game in basketball or football while at Calhoun Middle School. “Playing backyard football games with our family has been a lot of fun. Emaree Winston (Calhoun senior tight end and Texas football commit) is my cousin. I am a big Georgia Bulldogs football fan and he and I are flying out Saturday morning to Austin for the Texas-Georgia game and will be on the sidelines.”
