Starting a business means tackling countless challenges, but Human Resources often gets overlooked in the rush. In this Q&A, Rhonda Beard, Human Resources consultant and trainer for Bench Builders manufacturers in Chattanooga, offers advice for entrepreneurs working to attracting top talent, build company culture, craft benefit plans on a tight budget and more.
What’s the most important HR advice you would give someone starting a new business?
Most new businesses will not have a budget, or a need for a full-time HR manager starting out. Make sure to have an employment attorney or HR consultant in your business planning process to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local employment laws. Also, determine what type of culture and environment you want to create for employees, and have strategies and plans in place for recruiting, onboarding and training before hiring.
What are some common mistakes new business owners make regarding HR?
Many businesses have so many important tasks to plan when starting a new business, they often don’t think about the number of things new employees will be looking for or asking about. Clear job descriptions, an Employee Handbook with relevant policies and a benefit strategy are first steps. Having a detailed onboarding and training plan is essential to creating a great first impression for new employees.
