A developer withdrew his proposal to add 1,600 housing units at a large development off Tunnel Boulevard on Monday after months of meetings with neighbors concerned about the project.

Developer Michael Kenner told planning commissioners he wished to withdraw a rezoning case that would have made his vision for the project, which included some affordable housing, possible.

Commissioners voted to allow the case to be withdrawn. Chair Ethan Collier told residents who came to speak against the development they were free to go.

Many residents opposed it because they fear it would add more traffic to already crowded roads, strain local infrastructure and begin driving up home values, and therefore property tax, in the area. The ZIP code saw some of the biggest jumps in home values from this year’s reappraisal — the fourth highest of 29 ZIP codes in the county with a median increase of 89%.
