PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Phillies were outscored 25-8 on the road while being swept by the New York Mets in a three-game series that wrapped up Wednesday.
That allowed the second-place Mets to move within four games of first-place Philadelphia in the National League East Division standings, but the Phillies either put the humbling out of mind quickly or put it to work by taking some momentous anger into the next test.
It was hard to tell, but the Atlanta Braves bore the brunt of it either way.
Kyle Schwarber hit four home runs in Philadelphia’s 19-4 victory over Atlanta on Thursday night at Citizens Bank Park to become the fourth Phillies player and the 21st major leaguer to accomplish the feat.
Schwarber was 4-for-6 with a franchise-record nine RBIs. He took the outright NL homer lead with his 49th of the year and moved within one of Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh for the overall lead this season in Major League Baseball. Schwarber leads the majors with 119 RBIs.
