At last, the connecting ramps between Interstates 24 to 75 at Chattanooga’s infamous split at the Tennessee-Georgia line are set for a move of traffic into its final alignment starting this weekend, while other work is ongoing.
“As part of Phase 2 to widen and improve the I-75 at I-24 interchange, Tennessee Department of Transportation contract crews will begin moving traffic to its final alignment on the interstate ramps at the split over the next two weekends,” agency spokesperson Gracie Shamblin said in a news release.

Beginning Sunday through Tuesday, the interchange ramps from I-75 south to I-24 west and I-75 north to I-24 west will be widened to their final alignment, Shamblin said. The $161 million second phase of the work will tie into the $133 million first phase of the interchange improvement project, intended to answer decades of traffic snarls, backups and crashes.
“The new configuration will increase capacity from two lanes to three lanes on both interstate ramps,” Shamblin said. “Between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. each night, traffic will be reduced to one lane on each ramp and on I-24 west to facilitate this work.”
