TUNNEL HILL, Ga. — Calhoun raced out to a 20-0 lead in less than six minutes during Friday’s GHSA Region 7-AAA first-place showdown at Northwest Whitfield.

The groundwork speedily laid, the Yellow Jackets then cruised to a 42-20 win.

Calhoun (5-2, 3-0) put up 505 yards of total offense and displayed the kind of balance head coach Clay Stephenson wants from the reigning state champions. Sophomore quarterback Trace Hawkins was 21-of-28 passing for three touchdowns, all to senior receiver Justin Beasley, who had 11 catches and 163 yards.

It was running back Hudson Chadwick, though, who got things going for the visitors with a 46-yard rush on the game’s first play from scrimmage, setting up Tony Reid’s 8-yard touchdown run to cap a four-play, 76-yard drive. Chadwick would later score on a 50-yard run, part of his 192-yard performance on just 13 carries.
